Thomas Jefferson Gardens is sponsoring its second historic Cemetery Walk on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 pm, guided by Dianne Piepel, who researched the individuals for this year’s walk.
The walk will begin at the Welcome Center at 201 E. Lincoln Way. Participants may walk or drive to the Jefferson cemetery where a short narrative history of prominent and interesting citizens will be given. Be sure to bring a lawn chair and water bottle with you.
Some of the cemetery walk highlights include about a dozen headstones to view and hear the story of those individuals interred in the Jefferson Cemetery.
A few that will be featured are:
John and Happy Gallup – They are the grandparents of George Gallup, originator of the Gallup poll.
Dr Charles and Josephine Enfield – He was one of the finest local doctors in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Josephine was a loving wife and mother. Together they would share a tragic loss.
Horace Shipman and Marshal John Sweringen – Two men who battled it out to the end.
Jeff and Jessie Sayers – They were well known citizens both born in Greene County.
On the walk Piepel will speak about the types of stone used, the lettering and carving seen on the grave markers and unique symbols and their meaning.
